This week’s assembly is about the Windrush Generation, a key part of British history. In 1948, the ship HMT Empire Windrush arrived in the UK from the Caribbean, bringing people who were invited to help rebuild Britain after World War II. Many of those who came were nurses, engineers, teachers, and other workers who played a vital role in shaping modern Britain. They faced challenges, including racism and discrimination, but their contributions helped build the NHS, the transport system, and much more. The term "Windrush Generation" now refers to Caribbean people who arrived in the UK between 1948 and the early 1970s. Their culture, music, food, and values have enriched our society and continue to inspire generations today. The key lesson? The Windrush story teaches us about resilience, community, and the importance of recognising and respecting the contributions of all people in our society.
