GB Athlete Visit
We were delighted to welcome GB athlete Montell Douglas to UHS on Thursday 21st September. Montell came into school as part of the Youth Sport Trust’s Athlete Mentor programme, a visit we’d been lucky enough to win on the back of our successful School Sports Week last year. The aim of these visits in to engage and inspire the next generation and Montell certainly did just that! From discussing her time as a 100m sprinter in the Beijing Olympics and as a gold medal winner in the 4x100m relay at the Delhi Commonwealth Games, to her current role as a ‘brakeman’ for the GB women’s bobsleigh team.
Our year 12 BTEC PE students had a great discussion with Montell about the merits of sticking to a training regime and the importance of correct technique when training, with Montell then taking in the year 11 boot camp session. This was followed by a workshop with year 11 and then year 10 GCSE PE students, during which Montell had them all thinking not only about their current learning in PE, but also on the importance of being focussed and giving 100% effort. Each of these workshops was followed by an athletics masterclass, with Montell passing on her sprinting expertise to students through some inspiring demonstrations, which the students then tried to master themselves.
All in all, it was a highly successful experience thoroughly enjoyed by all and one that we hope many of our students will remember for some time to come.
