Enrichment & Life Skills

In addition to academic rigour, life in our Sixth form is also about expanding our students’ horizons and preparing them for life after Sixth Form.  Through a comprehensive enrichment programme, impartial careers advice, work experience and an exhaustive list of employability programmes, our learners develop personal, social, employability and independent learning skills.

 

Every Monday during Period 6 students choose from a range of different enrichment programmes, these include:

  • Duke of Edinburgh
  • Young Enterprise
  • Further Mathematics
  • Royal Shakespeare Company
  • UHS Football Club
  • PE mentoring

Our students are also encouraged to undertake voluntary and charity work and participate in projects that will encourage such qualities as perseverance, initiative and leadership.  Each year for example the Sixth Form take a lead role in assisted Christmas shopping for the elderly. 

Post 18 Programme

Through our links with local universities and organisations, students are guided towards a range of Post 18 programmes that aim to help students make an informed university course choice, these include:

  • Government Student Finance talks (Department for Business Innovation & Skills – Francesca Venting)
  • Brunel University Finance talk (Widening Participation Officer – Lesley Mortimer)
  • UCAS mentoring (UCL and Brunel students mentored Year 13 with UCAS applications)
  • Routes into STEM workshops (Brunel and Imperial College)
  • Virgin Atlantic Scholarship programme talk

  • Royal College of Surgeons Careers Day (Royal College)

Employability

We believe that now is the time to start developing students’ employability skills, many of which are embedded into other aspects of learning – attendance, punctuality, time management, resilience, motivation, communication skills and team work.  To develop students’ employability skills we offer the following programmes:

WORK EXPERIENCE 

At Uxbridge High School we also recognise the growing popularity of apprenticeships and have seen students now looking at the apprenticeship route as an alternative to university, especially as we are in close promixity to Heathrow Airport and many global companies.  Apprenticeship opportunities include:

  • NHS trust
  • RAF Law department (Northolt)
  • Barclays Bank (Canary Wharf)

The Sixth Form also offer a range of awareness courses and briefings including sessions on mental health amongst young people, Safe Drive Stay Alive workshop – (Hillingdon Council, London Ambulance Service, MET Police, London Fire Brigade and Transport for London
