Principal's Weekly Update

UHS Weekly Blog: Books, Events, and Independent Learning

Hello, Uxbridge High School community,

Welcome to this week’s blog! We are thrilled you continue engaging with us and hope you find these updates helpful and inspiring. Today, we are focusing on three key themes:

  1. Books that change the world
  2. Upcoming events as we approach the winter break
  3. The importance of independent practice

Books that Change the World

This week’s assemblies revolved around the theme of books that change the world. Ms Dhillon, from our English Department, shared some insights on how literature can profoundly impact lives. Students were introduced to books that have shaped the way we think about science, religion, art, culture, and society.

However, we also emphasised the importance of personal connections to literature. Every student was encouraged to reflect on books that have impacted their own lives—whether they were childhood favourites, classroom staples, or stories shared at home.

At UHS, we are lucky to have mini libraries in every curriculum area along with a digital platform for extended reading. This allows students to dive deeper into subjects they are passionate about while also discovering the joy of reading for pleasure. We are encouraging everyone to write about books that have shaped their world, with prizes for standout reflections.

Upcoming Events

As we approach the winter holidays, we have got plenty of events lined up:

  • Festive Christmas Lunch: Our school chef has been working hard to prepare a special Christmas meal. Sign up via ParentPay to ensure your child can join this wonderful community tradition. Please make payment on ParentPay.
  • Rewards Trips and Events: Students who have received Principal Postcards or participated in our Zero Hero initiative will be recognised in end-of-term assemblies.
  • Winter Music Showcase: After a week of auditions, the big event is set for Monday, 16th December. We invite all parents to attend and celebrate the amazing talent at UHS.
  • Year 11 Parents’ Evening: Scheduled for next week, this event is crucial for understanding your child’s progress in their recent PPEs and planning.

The Importance of Independent Practice

Independent practice is a cornerstone of learning both in school and at home. For Year 11, their PPE results will be broken down with a question-level analysis. This will include resources and activities they can work on independently to improve before their next exams.

However, independent practice is not just for Year 11—it is essential across all year groups. Whether it is completing tasks on our online platforms, reading around a subject, or consolidating classroom learning, these habits foster self-discipline and deeper understanding. Parents, please encourage your children to embrace these opportunities and reach out to subject leaders if you need guidance.

A Personal Reflection on Books

Finally, I would like to share how books have shaped my own life. As a student, I studied To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou, and The Colour Purple by Alice Walker. These powerful stories sparked my passion for equality and justice, which continues to influence my work in education today.

I hope our students find similar inspiration in the stories they read and use them to shape their own futures.

Thank you for reading and for your ongoing support as we make these last two weeks of term truly special. Stay tuned for more updates next week!

Warm regards,
